Ultimate Sacrifice: Teenage Boy In China Kills Himself So Family Can Afford Older Brother’s Kidney Transplant

Ultimate Sacrifice: Teenage Boy In China Kills Himself So Family Can Afford Older Brother’s Kidney Transplant

A Chinese teenager who killed himself so his parents could afford to save his older brother from dying has become a hero as the surviving sibling is now on the road to recovery.
China Daily reports that brothers Honghui (20) and Hongato (18) were diagnosed with Uremia, a symptom of kidney malfunction, within months of each other in 2010.
Unable to afford treatments for both children, parents Chuanyou and wife Zheng Tingxia sold almost everything they owned to pay for two matching kidneys needed to save the boys.
Time was running out and the search for a donor had yielded nothing, so Hongtao locked himself in his room and drank pesticide, dying a painful, slow death.
His body was found beside a heart-wrenching note that read:
“Brother, when you are cured, please tell me and it will be enough for me.”
Both brothers were at the top of their academic classes and the family had just gotten a new house when disaster struck in the summer of 2010.
Just as the family was coming to terms with Honghui’s life hanging in the hands of a kidney donor, Hongato was diagnosed with the exact same condition.
The family was forced to sell their new home as the boys’ father traveled all across China to various medical institutes to seek two matching kidneys.
Teachers and friends of the boys managed to raise another $16,000 for further treatment, but it was not enough.
The parents resorted to begging on the street to keep their children alive.
Hongato couldn’t bear to see his parents begging for money to save him so he wrote a short note and drank pesticide.
“Having both of us is ruining you,” the note read.
“I hope now that you will be able to concentrate on my brother and save his life. When he survives as I know he will, I simply want him to say to me I made it, and I will be content.”
His noble decision made headlines across the country and donations began flooding in.
After a two year search, a match for the surviving brother was found at the end of last year.
Now 23, Hongui has successfully undergone a kidney transplant and will make a full recovery, China Daily reports.
But father Gao Chuanyou (44) still has mixed emotions about what has become of his sons.
He reportedly told local media:
“I wonder perhaps how we can afford to be happy with Gao Hongtao, but we will take it one step at a time.”

Chinese Boyfriend Gets So Tired Of Shopping With His Girlfriend, He Jumps To Death In Mall

Chinese Boyfriend Gets So Tired Of Shopping With His Girlfriend, He Jumps To Death In Mall
A Chinese man jumped off a mall balcony to his death because his girlfriend refused to stop shopping.

According to Daily Mail, 38-year-old Tao Hsiao had been escorting his girlfriend around a shopping mall in Xuzhou, east China, for roughly five hours and demanded to go home.

Witnesses say Tao could be heard complaining that they had more bags than they could carry. His girlfriend, however, insisted they go to one more shop where there was a sale on shoes.

“He told her she already had enough shoes, more shoes that she could wear in a lifetime and it was pointless buying any more,” one witness said. “She started shouting at him accusing him of being a skinflint and of spoiling Christmas, it was a really heated argument.”
The shouting ended when Tao threw the bags on the floor and jumped over a nearby balcony, smashing into Christmas decorations before hitting the floor seven stories below.

The impact of the fall killed him immediately.

“He actually landed on one of the stalls below and then fell to the floor, so although the store was damaged it meant he didn’t hit anybody,” a mall spokesman said. “This is a tragic incident, but this time of year can be very stressful for many people.”

Manny Pacquiao payout: 'Pac Man' to bank $18 million tax-less purse for Brandon Rios fight

Kevin Lee
That's a whole lot of cash that won't be taxed in the U.S.
Manny Pacquiao may be one of the greatest boxers who ever laced up a pair of gloves but his exploits inside in the ring are rivaled only by his cavalier attitude towards his business dealings outside it.
In short, he's terrible with money.
That's why it's no surprise, then, that he would leave the not-so friendly confines of Las Vegas, Nevada, for his fight against Brandon Rios later on this evening (Sat., Nov. 23, 2013) at The Venetian in Macau, China. Why?
Because taxes are far more lenient there.
...Pacquiao choosing to take his talents to China, where he is hugely popular and, more importantly, the top marginal tax rate is only 12 percent. Because Pacquiao is neither a U.S. resident nor a citizen, he will not pay U.S. tax on any money earned from the fight, allowing him to pocket an extra 28 percent of the purse.
In simple terms, if Pacquiao rakes in $25 million from the Rios fight, holding the match in China will allow him to walk away with $22 million, while a Vegas bout would have left him with only $15 million.
Pacquiao is set to rake in $18 million for tonight, so you can do the math on that and see exactly why he decided to head across the world for his next showcase.
Earlier this year, ESPN went into detail on how dire "Pacman's" financial situation is:
"From what I can gather, Manny really can't be bothered with the minutiae of finance and keeping track of all his funds," said Lerner, who has known Pacquiao since he was a six-round fighter. "After years of spending like there was no tomorrow, it appears that tomorrow has come and Manny is in need of cash. He still has a lot of upkeep on his properties and businesses, and many people are relying on him to further their political careers. Manny has a hard time saying no, and people everywhere still constantly besiege him for help."
Although Pacquiao has apparently shed the hard-core gamblers who once surrounded him, a new group is draining the coffers. Pastors and other religious types have thoroughly ingratiated themselves, and Manny is said to have given heaps of cash for ministries and infrastructure projects related to their churches. He also foots the bill for the printing of thousands of bibles and the holding of massive religious rallies in expensive stadiums.
Yet Pacquiao's biggest single expense is his political career. He spent an estimated $6.6 million on his successful 2010 campaign to become the congressional representative of the district of Sarangani. In the latest election, which closed last week, Manny ran unopposed and consequently spent considerably less. Even so, wife Jinkee and brother Rogelio also ran for office (Jinkee won; Rogelio lost), and it cost Pacquiao approximately $2 million to finance the campaigns.
"Manny has clearly lost the zeal for boxing that he once had," Lerner said. "Before, he used to fight for the love of fighting, and the money seemed secondary. Now he is obviously fighting for only one reason: money."
Perhaps he is just fighting for money and maybe that has contributed to his losing his last two fights, a disputed decision to Timothy Bradley and a crushing knockout at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez.
Here's to hoping his head is in the game for Rios and we an exciting fight awaits.

Apple on hiring spree in China, report says

The company is reportedly looking for people across security, environmental affairs, and retail.

Sanlitun Apple store in Beijing, China

Apple is ramping up its China employee base, according to a new report.
Apple has posted over 200 openings on China's LinkedIn site, looking for a wide range of disciplines, the Wall Street Journal's Digits blog reported on Friday. Apple is specifically looking for people in environmental affairs, security, and retail, according to Digits.

According to Digits, the company's environmental affairs program manager will work out Beijing and "ensure that Apple's products and processes meet and surpass regional and national environmental regulatory requirements."Over the last several years, Apple has been hit hard with complaints by environmental activists who claim production of its devices in China-based manufacturing facilities, including those owned by Foxconn, was harming the environment. Apple has made strides in improving the environmental-friendliness of its products and the practices of its manufacturing partners, and provides continued updates on its efforts in those areas.
Apple is ostensibly hoping to fill those positions as soon as possible. There's no word on what the company is specifically looking for in the other disciplines.
