Why Richard Sherman Was Called A ‘Thug’ And Justin Bieber Wasn’t
Richard Sherman might have secured a spot on the Internet’s GIF Hall of Fame with his post-game rant after Sunday’s NFC championship game. However, the commentary surrounding Sherman’s comical outburst has prompted a national discussion about whether or not aspects of our nation’s vernacular are inherently racist.
Given a night to digest Sherman’s epic eruption, countless commentators dissecting the incident came to work Monday with the same noun on their lips, ready to pin it to the elite Seahawks defender: thug.
And pin it to him they did.
According to iQ Media, the word “thug” was uttered 625 times across all markets, more than on any other day in the past three years. By Tuesday, that number climbed to more than 1,500, as sports analysts and news reporters alike sought to package Sherman’s entire identity in four letters.
The shutdown cornerback, who has admittedly stirred up his fair share of controversy since entering the NFL in 2011, exhibited contrition for his actions Sunday, while expressing frustration and anger for repeatedly being described as a thug, a word he equates to the N-word.
“The only reason [being called a thug] bothers me is because it seems like it’s an accepted way of calling somebody the ‘N-word’ nowadays,” said Sherman during a press conference on Wednesday.
“There was a hockey game where they didn’t even play hockey. They just threw the puck aside and started fighting. I saw that and I’m like, ‘Wait, I’m a thug? What’s going on here?’ So I’m really disappointed in being called a thug.”
When one considers the word’s origins, it’s difficult to argue that Sherman is off-base with his analysis.
The term “thug” originates from the Hindi word “ṭhag” and the Sanskrit word “sthaga,” used to describe a “thief” or “rogue,” and it is believed to date back to the mid-14th century. It was coined for well-organized professional assassins and Mafioso-like gangs found throughout India for several centuries.
Call Sherman bombastic, arrogant, or even unlikeable, but the man is no thug – at least not by definition. In fact, he’s about as perfect an antithesis to the word as you’re likely to find.
After graduating as salutatorian from his high school in Compton, California (yes, that Compton), Sherman attended Stanford University, currently ranked the fifth-best overall university in the nation by US News and World Report.
There, he received a degree in communications, returning for a fifth year to get his master’s degree. By the way, he did this all while competing in both football and track and field at one of the country’s foremost programs.
Furthermore, Sherman doesn’t pride himself on his athletic ability, but rather, on his extensive preparation and study of the game:
“I feel like I’m a decent athlete, but my tape study and my meticulous attention to detail are what make me a good ball player,” said Sherman. “A lot goes into it man, a lot more than people think. Some dudes play with pure athleticism; I’m not one of those guys.”
So why, then, has a word that should be reserved for hardened criminals been used to define one of the NFL’s most studious players?
Richard Sherman’s publicly stated abhorrence of Michael Crabtree warrants such a description, while Justin Bieber virtually gets a pass after being arrested for drag racing while under the influence? I haven’t seen any Beliebers tweeting about him with #thug attached.
Shamefully, we must accept that certain words we have embraced as a society are actually racially coded substitutes for those we now consider repugnant.
However, just because the words themselves become unacceptable does not mean that the feelings behind them don’t linger in our minds.
Richard Sherman was labeled a thug simply because he was angry and black. Had Peyton Manning greeted Erin Andrews with the same intensity and tone in his post-game interview, we would have called it “passion.”

Why You Should Be Your Own Boss: 10 Reasons You Should Work For Yourself
Imagine a life in which you can live on your own terms, have the freedom to choose how you spend your time and the projects on which you work. With enough planning, patience and determination, this situation can be yours.
Let’s face it — we’ve all had a job that sucked the life out of us. The daily grind of working for a company that you don’t really care about is draining.
While self-employment can be a tough gig, as it comes with its own problems, stressors and setbacks, the sense of accomplishment and pride you’ll derive from it is worth the investment. Check out these 10 reasons you should get started today:
1. The flexibility to work anywhere
You can choose your location for working; one week you may be sitting on the beach in Greece with your laptop, while the next week may have you sailing the seas of Mexico. With today’s technological advancements, it’s possible to work from nearly anywhere.
2. Do work that you enjoy
Richard Branson reminds us that “some 80% of your life is spent working. You want to have fun at home; why shouldn’t you have fun at work?” If you hate your job, your negativity will spill into your personal life, making you feel tired and unmotivated. Life is way too short to waste time doing things you hate. Be an entrepreneur and get paid to do something that you actually enjoy.
3. You have the opportunity to create jobs
There is no greater accomplishment than being able to support others. If you create a small business, at some point, you’ll likely need to hire people to do jobs that you no longer have time to do yourself. As a result, you’ll help others pay their bills, feed their families and make a decent living.
4. Choose how much money you earn
Working for someone else really limits your earning capacity, and sadly, most companies expect you to work harder than ever with no extra incentive. Why put up with this when you can work equally hard but reap financial rewards for your efforts? Your earning capacity is limitless when you work for yourself.
5. You don’t have to answer to anyone
Chances are, at some point in your professional life, you had a boss who undermined your every decision. This situation is toxic and usually results in you losing self-confidence, self-respect and, most importantly, motivation. When you work for yourself, you call the shots. You’ll be more creative, determined and motivated as a result.
6. You will become more resilient
Working for yourself requires a lot of determination to push through the barriers and setbacks. However, over time you will learn and grow from those setbacks; you will learn what works and what doesn’t. You will become wiser and more resilient in both your business and personal life. Any successful entrepreneur will tell you that in facing failure, the path to success will grow clearer.
7. You will develop self-discipline
Entrepreneurship is a stressful venture — the flexibility of the working environment can be hazardous without enough self-discipline. With no set start time, you’re free to work in pajamas, but the absence of a routine can be detrimental; too much comfort may reduce productivity. Instead of becoming lazy, develop self-discipline by sitting down and drafting up a routine.
8. You can live a more meaningful life
Ultimately, work-life happiness comes from doing meaningful things. We all want to work for a worthy purpose or cause and know that our work is actually making a difference. Working for yourself will allow you to define what’s meaningful to you.
9. You will develop business sense
Most day jobs have set tasks, and often, it’s a matter of repeatedly doing the same thing. Not only is this boring, but it also fails to teach you anything new. Becoming an entrepreneur requires you to wear many hats — product development, marketing, sales, customer service, accounting, etc. Over time you will slowly develop a keen business sense, which will result in you becoming a more confident and successful entrepreneur.
10. You will leave a legacy behind
Working for yourself is an adventure. It will provide you with great stories to tell, wisdom to impart and a reason for people to remember and to respect you.

This Sneaky Beagle Manages To Steal Nuggets From The Oven When His Owners Aren’t Around
This dog is smarter than yours. And if you don’t agree, then you better video tape your dog doing something as skillful and impressive as this beagle’s attempt to get some chicken nuggets from the oven.
While I think that dogs are very smart and loyal animals, I never thought they were this smart. Then again, never underestimate a person or a dog’s resourcefulness when it comes to hunger… or chicken nuggets.
You do feel bad for him when he burns himself, though. But just goes to show, it doesn’t matter how much you want chicken nuggets if they’re too hot to eat.

Naya Rivera Debuts Lighter Hair at People's Choice Awards—Check Out Her New Look!
Naya Rivera went to the dark light side!
The Glee star looked nearly unrecognizable on the red carpet at the People's Choice Awards tonight, after ditching her dark brunette locks for a blonder 'do, and cutting her tresses shoulder length. Rivera rocked her new look with a simple yet sexy nude, white and black Michael Kors dress for the event.
"We have the BEST fans in the world! Thanks again to everyone for voting," the TV star posted on Instagram with a photo of herself snapping pictures with the crowd.
There's no word what was behind the transformation, but Naya definitely werks it.
The actress has been celebrating new changes in her personal life as well. She recently became engaged to her rapper beau Big Sean. E! News first confirmed the engagement news in October, after Rivera showed off her new sparkler at Latina magazine's Hollywood Hot List Party.
And Big Sean has been showering his lady with diamonds ever since. After Christmas, theGlee star posted a close-up picture of what her fiancé surprised her with on the holiday: a simple yet stunning diamond necklace.
Naya and Big Sean have been very open about their love for one another ever since their relationship went public. Big Sean even gushed about his girl to E! News, telling us, "Every morning I wake up, I look over at her and be like, 'I'm winning so hard.'"
Aw, so sweet.
Are you a fan of Naya's new look? Sound off in the comments!
Miley Cyrus Lands Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2014 Campaign See the Pic!
Now this is major news!
A source confirms to E! News that Miley Cyrus has just landed herself an impressive spot as the new face of Marc Jacobs spring/summer 2014 campaign, and we're totally in love with this pairing.
It's no secret that Miley is a big fan of the fashion designer, famously wearing that sheer mesh gown of his at the 2013 Met Gala in New York.
The edgy singer has made countless headlines in recent months with her selfies, twerking antics, provocative outfits and new album, and now; she's taking on a more sophisticated role modeling for the designer clothing line.
In the campaign, she poses on a sandy beach, lost in thought; her expression looks somber, pensive and somewhat troubled.
She wears a structured navy cropped coat with fancy embellished details, decorative maroon bermuda shorts and embroidered ankle booties.
Her nails are trimmed short and painted black, her smattering of tattoos are on full display, adding a rebellious twist to the imagery.
Her makeup is soft and sultry, while her pout is glossed with a subtle nude shade for a nearly naked effect, while her hair is undone and blowing casually in the wind.
In short, the almost eerie image captures a reflective side of the star that we're not quite accustomed to, but we're warming up to this evolved maturity right away.
What do you think of Miley's new campaign for Marc Jacobs?

It's that time of year again!
The People Choice Awards honors the big stars that were chosen by the fans! And if you weren't able to watch tonight's big show, well, we feel sorry for you because it was absolutely fantastic. But don't feel too bad. We round up all the night's biggest highlights so you don't feel left out.
Let's get to it...
Best Intro Ever?!: Crossing over from their show, 2 Broke Girls, Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs began the People's Choice Awards in an epic manner. Numerous nominees—including Christina Aguilera, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ian Somerhalder—showed up at the diner, letting viewers know it was time for the show! Once Kaley Cuoco showed up and handed over hosting duties, it was time to get to it.
Best Food: Everyone got burgers and fries! Jealous.
Worst Let Down: Sorry, Ellen DeGeneres, you don't get to go up and accept Justin Timberlake's award with him. We know. It sucks. But at least you got a shout out (along with J.T.'s wife, Jessica Biel. Too cute!).
Best Bump: Drew Barrymore flaunted her growing baby bump when presenting the award for Favorite Comedic Movie Actor. And then Ellen called her "fat." Oh, you guys, she was totes kidding. Adam Sandler kept the jokes rolling when he told her, "You do look like you lost weight."
Worst Attempt at Having an Awkward Moment: Zac Efron does not have awkward moments. Even when he tries to have an awkward moment, he doesn't. He just stands there looking amazing.
Best Musical Performance: This was done by none other than your host Beth Behrs, who performed tidbits of "Wrecking Ball," "Before He Cheats" and "Baby Got Back." She even twerked and ended her singing showdown by dropping the mike and walking off stage.
Awkward Alert?: Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder may be broken up in real life, but they didn't let it get too awkward when accepting the award for Best Onscreen Chemistry. Nope, not at all. P.S. Can something actually happen between Malin Akerman and Shemar Moore? That was hot!
Best Newlywed Kiss: First-time winner Kaley Cuoco gave her new hubby Ryan Sweetinga quick smooch before accepting her award on stage. "This is the second best thing to happen to me all year, the first was marrying you baby," she said.
Go Brit!: Britney Spears, after carefully going up the stairs, won a People's Choice Award for Best Pop Artist, and she was so thankful y'all.
Throwback Thanks: Sarah Michelle Gellar won her first PCA and made sure to thank the peeps from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. People cheered and suddenly it was 2000 again.
Best (or Worst?) Seating Arrangement: Kaley Cuoco was sitting inbetween her hubby Ryan Sweeting and ex-boyfriend/costar Johnny Galecki.
