Why Richard Sherman Was Called A ‘Thug’ And Justin Bieber Wasn’t

Why Richard Sherman Was Called A ‘Thug’ And Justin Bieber Wasn’t

Richard Sherman might have secured a spot on the Internet’s GIF Hall of Fame with his post-game rant after Sunday’s NFC championship game. However, the commentary surrounding Sherman’s comical outburst has prompted a national discussion about whether or not aspects of our nation’s vernacular are inherently racist.
Given a night to digest Sherman’s epic eruption, countless commentators dissecting the incident came to work Monday with the same noun on their lips, ready to pin it to the elite Seahawks defender: thug.
And pin it to him they did.
According to iQ Media, the word “thug” was uttered 625 times across all markets, more than on any other day in the past three years. By Tuesday, that number climbed to more than 1,500, as sports analysts and news reporters alike sought to package Sherman’s entire identity in four letters.
The shutdown cornerback, who has admittedly stirred up his fair share of controversy since entering the NFL in 2011, exhibited contrition for his actions Sunday, while expressing frustration and anger for repeatedly being described as a thug, a word he equates to the N-word.
“The only reason [being called a thug] bothers me is because it seems like it’s an accepted way of calling somebody the ‘N-word’ nowadays,” said Sherman during a press conference on Wednesday.
“There was a hockey game where they didn’t even play hockey. They just threw the puck aside and started fighting. I saw that and I’m like, ‘Wait, I’m a thug? What’s going on here?’ So I’m really disappointed in being called a thug.”
When one considers the word’s origins, it’s difficult to argue that Sherman is off-base with his analysis.
The term “thug” originates from the Hindi word “ṭhag” and the Sanskrit word “sthaga,” used to describe a “thief” or “rogue,” and it is believed to date back to the mid-14th century. It was coined for well-organized professional assassins and Mafioso-like gangs found throughout India for several centuries.
Call Sherman bombastic, arrogant, or even unlikeable, but the man is no thug – at least not by definition. In fact, he’s about as perfect an antithesis to the word as you’re likely to find.
After graduating as salutatorian from his high school in Compton, California (yes, that Compton), Sherman attended Stanford University, currently ranked the fifth-best overall university in the nation by US News and World Report.
There, he received a degree in communications, returning for a fifth year to get his master’s degree. By the way, he did this all while competing in both football and track and field at one of the country’s foremost programs.
Furthermore, Sherman doesn’t pride himself on his athletic ability, but rather, on his extensive preparation and study of the game:
“I feel like I’m a decent athlete, but my tape study and my meticulous attention to detail are what make me a good ball player,” said Sherman. “A lot goes into it man, a lot more than people think. Some dudes play with pure athleticism; I’m not one of those guys.”
So why, then, has a word that should be reserved for hardened criminals been used to define one of the NFL’s most studious players?
Richard Sherman’s publicly stated abhorrence of Michael Crabtree warrants such a description, while Justin Bieber virtually gets a pass after being arrested for drag racing while under the influence? I haven’t seen any Beliebers tweeting about him with #thug attached.
Shamefully, we must accept that certain words we have embraced as a society are actually racially coded substitutes for those we now consider repugnant.
However, just because the words themselves become unacceptable does not mean that the feelings behind them don’t linger in our minds.
Richard Sherman was labeled a thug simply because he was angry and black. Had Peyton Manning greeted Erin Andrews with the same intensity and tone in his post-game interview, we would have called it “passion.”

Michelle Rodriguez Gives Cara Delevingne a Sloppy Kiss at NBA Game, Then Does High Kicks With Gal Pal

James Devaney/WireImage
The New York Knicks may have won the basketball game on Tuesday, Jan. 7, but all eyes were on Michelle Rodriguez and Cara Delevingne packing on some courtside PDA.
We can now add the Fast and Furious star to the Victoria's Secret model's long list of celebrity pals, and the duo really enjoyed each other's company at the NBA game.
Throughout the evening, the friendly pair was spotted cuddling, puffing e-cigarettes, sharing sloppy kisses and posing for silly selfies, which have yet to be posted to either of the ladies' social media accounts.
Barbera/Cepeda/INFphoto.comAccording to Page Six, the 35-year-old actress was making out with the 21-year-old model in the fourth quarter, after "drinking throughout the contest."

Following the game, several photographers met Rodgriguez and Delevingne as they made their way out of Madison Square Garden.
In lieu of more lovey dovey antics, the duo switched gears and performed some high kicks with some humorous angry facial expressions.
Rodriguez wasn't the only celeb that Delevingne spent time with at the sporting event.
"Get out the licks for the Knicks @kellanlutz," Delevingne captioned a cute Instagram pic with Kellan Lutz.
Not surprisingly, the friends are both sticking out their tongues for the camera, with Delevingne's tongue pressed against the Twilight hunk's cheek. They are wearing caps that show their team spirit for the New York basketball team.

Vin Diesel Shares Epic Paul Walker Video: Watch Their Best Offscreen Bromance Moments Right Here

If you have 20 minutes to spare (and don't mind getting emotional), then you must watch this.
Vin Diesel hinted that he has something special planned for his 60 million Facebook fans that have helped him cope with the loss of his best friend Paul Walker. "You have always been so supportive, especially in these past two months… So, I wanted to share something personal that I worked on through the New Year, in honor of my brother Pablo… Paul," Diesel wrote on Facebook yesterday.
Sure enough, the Fast and Furious star posted an epic 18 and a half minutes worth of footage on the social media website, full of his interactions with Walker over the years. Diesel captioned the "Vinbook" clip, "A glimpse... of Dom and Brian… off screen."

facebook.com
The video features multiple clips from Walker and Diesel's time together, whether it be promoting a film from their car-racing franchise or just hanging out. At the end, the words, "Miss you..." flash across the screen.
Vin has been very open about his mourning of the Walker's death following the actor's fiery car crash in late November.
"When I heard, I immediately flew back to California, and went directly from the plane to his mother's house...," Diesel wrote on Facebook shortly after the tragedy occurred. "I thought they needed my strength, but realized when I got there and broke down before his family, that it was I who needed theirs."
He continued, "His mother hugged me and said I am so sorry... I said sorry? You're the mother who lost a son?... She said yes, but you lost your other half..."
Diesel also attended a private memorial service for Walker in Santa Clarita, Calif., and made an impromptu speech in Valencia using a sheriff's car's microphone.
Calling the 40-year-old star his "brother," Vin thanked attendees for their support in light of the celeb's passing. "At this hard time his family gets to see all of you show the love that you've shown Paul. It's going to stay with me forever," Diesel said. "I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for coming down here and showing that angel up in heaven how much you appreciate him."

Justin Bieber Reunites With Selena Gomez—See the Sweet Pic!

Perhaps Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are giving their relationship another chance in 2014.
Several days after the exes were spotted riding segways, the 19-year-old pop superstar shared a cuddling snapshot with the brunette beauty on his Instagram account.
"Love the way you look at me," the "Boyfriend" singer captioned the gray-tinted photograph, which he added in the wee hours on Saturday, Jan. 4.
The Texas native is hugging the Canadian singer from behind while her chin comfortably rests on his shoulder. She is gazing down at him and is cracking a sweet close-mouthed smile. The Biebs is holding up his phone to capture the moment and is looking into the camera.
This photo comes two days after the on-again, off-again couple reunited for the first time in a long time and were photographed riding segways around The Oaks, fueling speculation that they had rekindled their romance.
Both Selena and Bieber's reps declined to comment on that particular sighting. The couple broke up in November 2012.
J.B. recently revealed that he still has feelings for his ex-girlfriend while stopping by Big Boy's Neighborhood for Los Angeles hip-hip radio station Power 106.
"I wrote the best music once my heart was broken," he told Big Boy on Dec. 18. "‘All That Matters' was written when I was in a great place in my relationship, and at that time, she was all that mattered in my life."
Bieber continued, "[The break up] affected us, especially when we are in front of so many people. It's such a public thing. It's just hard for the both of us. But you know, she's a great woman. I love her till this day."
And judging by this picture, he still loves the way she looks at him.

Miley Cyrus' "Adore You Video"—Watch Singer Rock Bra and Panties in Bed for Sexy New Song

Miley Cyrus' "Adore You" music video is here!
After teasing fans with scantily clad shots from the project Dec. 21, the 21-year-old pop star debuted the full-length music video Thursday.
And it is sexy, to say the least.
In the provocative, nearly five-minute long clip, Cyrus rolls around in a bed in a sheer bra and panties, bites her lips (and the sheets) and films herself while she's at it.
Miley Cyrus, Adore Yo, InstagramInstagram
She even flashes a bit of blurred nip after running her fingers down to her underwear.
Before the music video was done, Cyrus also hopped in a bathtub in an all-black, crocheted outfit, writhing around in the water, sticking out her tongue and caressing her body.
Although Cyrus had been promoting (and teasing) the video for a few days, someone else beat her to its big debut and leaked the video Wednesday.
"We all know Smilers would break another record if it wasn't for the f--k face who leaked my video. Alllllll good! Keep smiling :)," Cyrus tweeted that day.
Prior to her official "Adore You" music video release, the "Wrecking Ball" songstress spent some quality time with her family, posting a shot of herself with her loved ones on Christmas day, play fighting near their Christmas tree.
"Annual family fist fight," Cyrus captioned the shot on Instagram Wednesday.
So, tell us…what do you think of Miley's new music video?
Sound off in the comments.

The future of Fast & Furious 7 was up in the air after Walker and his friend Roger Rodas passed away in a tragic car crash Nov. 30.
The film was in production at the time of Walker's death and over 60 percent of it had already been shot.
Following his untimely passing, Universal released a statement saying they were shutting down production to provide "support to Paul's immediate family and our extended Fast & Furious family of cast, crew and filmmakers."
The studio went on to say they were assessing "all options available to move forward with the franchise."
No further information has been given just yet in regards to how the film's production will proceed without Walker.

Phil Robertson Suspended From Duck Dynasty Over Anti-Gay Comments

Phil Robertson, Duck DynastyA&E
Phil Robertson has lost his place at the head of the Duck Dynasty table for the forseeable future.
The Robertson family patriarch has been suspended from their hit reality show in light of anti-gay remarks he made in an interview with GQ, released today, in which he grouped homosexuality in with bestiality as deviant behavior.
"We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson's comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series Duck Dynasty," A&E parent A+E Networks said in a statement obtained by E! News.
"His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community. The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely."
The 67-year-old founder of the Duck Commander Co. shared a number of views that may have shocked fans of the show who tune in for the inexplicably engrossing hijinks, the generally congenial members of the Robertson family and the always-entertaining facial hair.
"Everything is blurred on what's right and what's wrong," Phil told GQ. "Sin becomes fine."
"Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men," he continued, going on to paraphrase Corinthians, from the seventh book of the New Testament.
"It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man's anus," Robertson added. "That's just me. I'm just thinking: There's more there! She's got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I'm saying? But hey, sin: It's not logical, my man. It's just not logical."
Phil Robertson, GQJeff Reidel/GQ
Phil's son Jep Robertson also told the men's mag: "We're not quite as outspoken as my dad, but I'm definitely in line. If somebody asks, I tell 'em what the Bible says."
GLAAD issued a response to the article, saying, "Phil's lies about an entire community fly in the face of what true Christians believe."
Phil's view of the world didn't only diverge from political correctness when it came to the LGBT community, either.
He also recalled to GQ growing up near black farmers in the Jim Crow South, saying, "I never heard one of them, one black person, say, 'I tell you what: These doggone white people'—not a word!... Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues."
Pre-suspension, but in reponse to the insta-backlash over his remarkers, Phil issued the following statement, obtained by E! News:
Jase Robertson, Si Robertson, Willie Robertson, Phil Robertson, Duck Dynasty Art Streiber/A & E
"I myself am a product of the '60s; I centered my life around sex, drugs and rock and roll until I hit rock bottom and accepted Jesus as my Savior. My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and men are meant to be together. However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other."
Duck Dynasty's fifth season is currently set to premiere on Jan. 15.

Justin Bieber on Ex-Girlfriend Selena Gomez: "I Love Her Till This Day"—Watch Now!

Things are about to get real emotional, you guys.
It's been a while since null and null called it quits, but it still hurts (it was supposed to be J.B. + S.G. 4eva!). And those who were especially saddened by the Hollywood couple's breakup may find themselves close to shedding a tear after hearing what Biebs had to say about it all.
The 19-year-old pop star stopped by Big Boy's Neighborhood for Power 106, and while promoting his new music on the Los Angeles hip-hip radio station, Bieber confessed that he's still in love with Selena.
"I wrote the best music once my heart was broken," he told Big Boy.
Awwww. But don't get your hopes up just yet. Justin added, "I think we're going to be the greatest of friends. Right now we're taking a little time and not talking."
Justin Bieber, TwitterTwitter
Bieber's "All That Matters" track has been hitting the airwaves recently. Some of the lyrics from his Gomez-inspired single include, "You're all that matters to me/ Ain't worried about nobody else/ If it ain't you, I ain't myself/ You make me complete."
Justin didn't spend his entire interview reminiscing on what once was. The young celeb made sure to get in a good prank for fans.
In a short video clip, the Biebs said, "Um, I'm actually retiring, man." Although he said it with a straight face, we have a feeling the comment was said in fun and Bieber isn't really quitting music.
His reps had no comment, but a source told E! News, "Of course it's not true."
Whew.

Low Blow: Miley’s BFF Mocks Demi Lovato For Her Drug Addiction

Low Blow: Miley’s BFF Mocks Demi Lovato For Her Drug Addiction
Okay a-hole, what gives you the right to bash a young girl’s struggle?
Cheyne Thomas, aka Miley Cyrus‘s Bff because let’s be real what else does this guy have going for him, posted a video mocking Demi Lovato‘s serious battle with drug addiction.
Before you start running your mouth, why don’t you take a look in the mirror? First off, the table cloth you’re trying to pass as a shirt is just not cutting it, and your voice? That’s just a no-no.

Thomas is no stranger to being a dick towards celebrities. He lashed out against Kelly Clarkson after she tweeted the following during the VMA‘s back in August:
Just saw a couple performances from the VMA’s last night. 2 words….#pitchystrippers
— Kelly Clarkson (@kelly_clarkson) August 26, 2013
This singer is amazingly talented and knows a pitchy performance when she sees one. Hate to break it you, but Miley’s vocals were all over the place during her infamous act.
Thomas has since removed his tweets from Twitter, but Fishwrapper has luckily provided them for us:
@DominicScott and she’s fat and 30..
— Cheyne Thomas (@CheyneThomas) August 26, 2013
@DominicScott the reasons Kelly Clarkson is bitter could really go on for day..
— Cheyne Thomas (@CheyneThomas) August 26, 2013
Again, what a dick! Is it really all that surprising that this is Miley’s best friend? Not in the slightest…always keeping it classy, Miley.

Duck Dynasty's Phil Robertson Says Being Gay Is Illogical: A Vagina Is More Desirable Than a Man's Anus

Duck DynastyGQ
As a straight man, Duck Dynasty's Phil Robertson doesn't understand what it means to be gay.
In the January 2014 issue of GQ, the A&E reality star shares his views on homosexuality and opens up about his conservative, Louisiana-based family, and their strong Christian faith.
"We're Bible-thumpers who just happened to end up on television," he says of his family's meteoric rise to fame, which has landed them multiple tabloid covers and a spot on Barbara WaltersMost Fascinating People of 2013 list. "You put in your article that the Robertson family really believes strongly that if the human race loved each other and they loved God, we would just be better off. We ought to just be repentant, turn to God, and let's get on with it, and everything will turn around."
One thing isn't likely to turn around, however, is the duck hunter's views on modern immorality. "Everything is blurred on what's right and what's wrong," Phil says. "Sin becomes fine."

"Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men," he tells the magazine. Paraphrasing Corinthians, he says, "Don't be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won't inherit the kingdom of God. Don't deceive yourself. It's not right."
Phil continues, "It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man's anus. That's just me. I'm just thinking: There's more there! She's got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I'm saying? But hey, sin: It's not logical, my man. It's just not logical."
Jep Robertson doesn't explicitly tell GQ that he agrees with his father's sentiments, but it seems likely that he does. "We're not quite as outspoken as my dad, but I'm definitely in line," he says of his backwater family. "If somebody asks, I tell 'em what the Bible says."
Phil, 67, later says that he's not too concerned with how other people are living.
"We never, ever judge someone on who's going to heaven, hell. That's the Almighty's job. We just love 'em, give 'em the good news about Jesus—whether they're homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. We let God sort 'em out later, you see what I'm saying?"
Phil also predicts Duck Dynasty will be off the air in three to five years. He's grateful to have been able to share his family's views with more than 14 million viewers each week.
"For the sake of the Gospel, it was worth it," he says of doing the reality show. "All you have to do is look at any society where there is no Jesus. I'll give you four: Nazis, no Jesus. Look at their record. Uh, Shintos? They started this thing in Pearl Harbor. Any Jesus among them? None. Communists? None. Islamists? Zero. That's 80 years of ideologies that have popped up where no Jesus was allowed among those four groups. Just look at the records as far as murder goes among those four groups."
(As GQ notes, Phil ignores centuries of war, bloodshed and human enslavement committed in the name of Christ.)
Phil—who says he misses the "old days"—believes all sinners are capable of finding salvation.
"If you simply put your faith in Jesus coming down in flesh, through a human being, God becoming flesh living on the earth, dying on the cross for the sins of the world, being buried, and being raised from the dead—yours and mine and everybody else's problems will be solved," he says.

This Random Dude Snuck His Way Ringside And Into The Ring During The Manny Pacquiao Fight (Video)

Scumbagging your way into events is one of the most important skills anyone needs to acquire to get anywhere in life.
But one man, simply known as Donnie, took it to the next level after somehow sneaking into the Manny Pacquiaovs. Brandon Rios fight in Macao while wearing an all-green Larry Bird ”suisy” (a jersey suit) and walking around like he owned the place.
Donnie recorded his entire adventure and posted it to show us all that literally anything is possible.
After getting past the first round of security, Donnie stormed right in and went straight to the ringside. He picked out some awesome seats conveniently located behind the ring girls and next to Pacquiao’s family.
After the fight, Donnie said f*ck it, and just entered into the ring. From the looks of it, he might’ve taken one of the ring girls home, as well. To say that this man is a legend is a gross understatement. That means something, especially considering that he’s a Celtics fan.
This just goes to show you, scumbagging can take you far in life and bring you to heights you’ve never even imagined. Everybody be like this guy!

Is Justin Bieber About To Replace Paul Walker In ‘The Fast And The Furious 7′?

Is Justin Bieber About To Replace Paul Walker In ‘The Fast And The Furious 7′?
Director of “The Fast And The Furious,” James Wan, has no intention of abandoning the seventh installment despite the death of the films’ leading man. At this point, there are no details about how the “Fast and Furious” series will conclude, but it is certainly going to require major re-writes.
The newest RUMOR circulating the web is that Justin Bieber will be put in the latest of the “Fast And Furious” films. Jesus Christ, this better not be true or F&F fans will most likely boycott the film. It’s also unclear if Bieber would replace PaulWalker‘s character, Brian O’Connor, or if something else would worked out entirely.
Carbuzz is telling us that, “One thing is clear though, Bieber has some important supporters, with Ludacris having already voiced his approval of the idea of putting the 19-year-old Canadian in the film.”
This is definitely going to stir up some major controversy. There’s no way members of Paul Walker’s family or Vin Diesel are going to let this decision be made without their involvement. As of now, this is a just a rumor, but it’s not too surprising that Universal is shopping for options.
As more unfolds, we will be sure to update you!
