2013 Emmy Awards: 10 Things You Gotta Know

Neil Patrick HarrisJason LaVeris/FilmMagic
It's almost time for TV's biggest night!
This evening, the television stars who make us laugh, cry or even scream will come together for the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.
Broadcasting live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, the glamorous awards show will feature our favorite stars from the small screen including SofĂa Vergara, Bryan Cranston and Amy Poehler.
As you make your final predictions and clear your schedule (yes, you can DVRDexter and Breaking Bad), we're giving you 10 things you have to know before tonight's big show.
Pop the popcorn and get ready! The Emmys are just hours away.
1. Neil Patrick Harris Is Back: The wait is finally over! The How I Met Your Motherstar, who first hosted in 2009, will return to the center stage at tonight's show. So what can we expect? "I want to do my own thing and hope people respond to it," the actor told USA Today. "I think the key is to try and be nice. I'm not so wild a fan of comedy at people's expense."

2. Cory Monteith's Emotional Tribute: Jane Lynch is expected to pay tribute to her close friend and Glee costar Sunday night. In a special (and emotional) In Memorium segment, Monteith and James Gandolfini, Jean Stapleton, Gary David Goldberg and Jonathan Winters will be honored for their bodies of work.
3. Elton John Is Performing: Yes, this night is technically dedicated to the best stars in television. However, that won't make us complain about a few superstar musical guests. The "Rocket Man" singer is scheduled to pay tribute to Liberace, whose HBO biopic, Behind the Candelabra, is up for 15 Emmys. The performance will mark John's first appearance at the TV awards show.

4. Carrie Underwood Is Singing Too:Oh, did we forget to mention this? TheAmerican Idol winner is performing as well! The country beauty will honor the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Don Cheadle will introduce what is sure to be a very moving segment of the show.
5. Bring on the Red Carpet Critiques: Get ready Joan Rangers! The entire Fashion Police team will be hard at work as they follow all of the Emmy trends. In a special Monday night episode, Joan Rivers, Kelly Osbourne, Giuliana Rancic and George Kotsiopoulos will then deliver their honest views on all the dresses. We can't wait for this!
6. Kerry Washington Likely to Stun:One celebrity who likely won't have to worry about the Fashion Police team is Washington. The Scandal star, who was recently crowned the World's Best Dressed Woman by People magazine, is expected to shine at this year's red carpet. She's also favored to win big for her role on ABC's Scandal. You go, Kerry!
7. Emmy Dress Drama: Some stars like Sarah Hyland are well prepared for tonight's show. Last week, the Modern Family actress said she had her "vintage look" dress all picked out. Other stars like Afre Woodard aren't so lucky. "I don't have a gown! I have been busy," the actress said earlier in the week. "I haven't even been in the country until this past week and I'm like, ‘What am I going to put on?'" With sunny, comfortable temperatures forecasted for Los Angeles, at least the stars have the weather on their side.

8. Could The Voice Finally Win? After years and years of winning Best Reality Competition Series, The Amazing Race may have finally met its match. E!'s TV expert Kristin Dos Santos argues The Voice could crush the Emmy favorite. With the coaches' fantastic chemistry and those gripping battle rounds, NBC might have a big winner on their hands.
9. Breaking Bad's Big Night: As we count down to the dramatic finale, all signs point to wins for Breaking Bad. Bryan Cranston, Anna Gunn and Aaron Paul are all favorites to take their respective acting categories. Let's hope Emmy night is just as epic as the final episodes.
10. Modern Family's Winning Streak: Are the Pritchetts going to win again? For the past three years, the ABC favorite has taken home the top prize for outstanding comedy series. Will it be four in a row? We certainly won't be surprised.

Zooey Deschanel Explains Blue-Faced Selfie, Dishes on New Girl's Hookup at Emmys

Why so blue?!
That was the question we were asking after Zooey Deschanel posted a photo of her face painted blue in August, which she simply captioned, "Weird job..." What exactly is going on over on New Girl's set, we wondered.
Well, now we know! On the red carpet at the 2013 Emmys, where she is presenting an award, Deschanel revealed to E! News' Ryan Seacrest why Jess' face will be oh-so-very blue in an upcoming episode of her hit seriesNew Girl. Plus, she gave us the inside scoop on how she picked out that gorgeous blue dress...
"It's from episode three or four," Deschanel dished of the sneak peek photo. "I'm dressing up as Papa Smurf."
Say whaaa?! Why is Jess dressing up as Papa Smurf? "Ask Nick!" Deschanel teased, adding that she believes friends should make an attempt at romance in real-life too, just like Jess and Nick (Jake Johnson). "Why not?! Life's short?"
As for her stunning J. Mendel dress, which she paired with a gorgeous Chanel ring, Deschanel revealed, "It actually was the first one I saw on the rack…it was perfect."

Zooey Deschanel Showcases Chic Black-and-White Mani at the 2013 Emmy Awards

Okay, so it's not little tuxedos, but it's just as cool!
Actress Zooey Deschanel instagrammed her fab Emmy mani─and we're loving the simple black-and-white look. The nails look somewhat domino-inspired, with a square design featuring black and white dots.

The mani compliments her gorgeous ice-blue J. Mendel gown (she also showed up with some serious wrist bling to offset the graphic mani). She added a large Chanel ring to complete her look.
Deschanel has showcased other whimsical manis at past award shows: at last year's Golden Globes, the actress rocked ultra-Hollywood white, black, and gold nails with a film reel design. At the 2012 Emmys, she wore a quirky peach polka-dot design dotted with Swarovski crystals.
What do you think of Zooey's graphic-chic mani? Sound off in the comments.

Girls' Allison Williams Talks Emmys Dress: "Really Classic and Beautiful"

Allison Williams had a lot of fun looking for the perfect Emmys dress.
"I kind of considered everything," the Girls star told me at the BAFTA Los Angeles TV Tea Party. "I almost didn't want it to end. But when I met this dress I knew that we were done. I just love it. It's really classic and beautiful and it feels like me and the minute I wore it, it felt like a no-brainer.
"That's what you kind of hope for," she said. "It's like a house, a husband, it's all of those things. You hope that you know immediately."

And Williams knows she can probably enjoy a little more breakfast tomorrow, too.
"I will start with good intentions and have a smoothie and then I'll probably see a bagel and not giving too much away, my dress allows for a bagel," she said with a big smile. "So I may indulge and then it will spiral, I'm sure."
Emmys morning is usually "low-key," Williams said. "We leave plenty of time, there's a lot of music, people coming in and out. I like to have friends stop by."
But there won't be any bubbly? "There is no champagne—Diet Cokes like crazy!" Williams said. "I think there is so much Diet Coke in my system as this point, I've developed a resistance to it."

2013 Emmys: Jon Hamm & Amy Poehler Throwing Secret After-Party... for Losers!

Jon Hamm, ESPY AwardsFrederick M. Brown/Getty Images for ESPY
Even if Jon Hamm and Amy Poehler don't go home with an Emmy on Sunday, they have plenty to celebrate.
The two have actually teamed up to cohost an after-party just for the night's losers.
"We figured that the winners get celebrated enough so we thought it was about time that the losers get celebrated," Hamm exclusively told me earlier tonight at Vanity Fair and Maybelline's Mad Mad party at Chateau Marmont. "And Poehler and I are friends from a long time ago and every year when we would lose the Emmy we would kind of wink at each other and call each other loser for the rest of the night."

The idea was hatched when Kristen Wiig threw a big bash after last year's Emmys at her hotel.
"We called it the Losers Lounge because nobody that was there won and it kind of stuck," Hamm said. "We were like, ‘That was a really fun party. We should do that again, but we should do it bigger and better and invite our friends who aren't going to win either and we'll have a good time with it.'"
But winners won't exactly be turned away.
"You have to actually check your Emmy at the door and donate a $1,000 dollars to a charity," Hamm's longtime actress-director girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt said, adding, "We might end up doing a lot for humanity on Sunday night."
