Why so blue?!

That was the question we were asking after Zooey Deschanel posted a photo of her face painted blue in August, which she simply captioned, "Weird job..." What exactly is going on over on New Girl's set, we wondered.

Well, now we know! On the red carpet at the 2013 Emmys, where she is presenting an award, Deschanel revealed to E! News' Ryan Seacrest why Jess' face will be oh-so-very blue in an upcoming episode of her hit seriesNew Girl. Plus, she gave us the inside scoop on how she picked out that gorgeous blue dress...

"It's from episode three or four," Deschanel dished of the sneak peek photo. "I'm dressing up as Papa Smurf."

Say whaaa?! Why is Jess dressing up as Papa Smurf? "Ask Nick!" Deschanel teased, adding that she believes friends should make an attempt at romance in real-life too, just like Jess and Nick (Jake Johnson). "Why not?! Life's short?"

As for her stunning J. Mendel dress, which she paired with a gorgeous Chanel ring, Deschanel revealed, "It actually was the first one I saw on the rack…it was perfect."

Zooey Deschanel Showcases Chic Black-and-White Mani at the 2013 Emmy Awards

Okay, so it's not little tuxedos, but it's just as cool!

Actress Zooey Deschanel instagrammed her fab Emmy mani─and we're loving the simple black-and-white look. The nails look somewhat domino-inspired, with a square design featuring black and white dots.

The mani compliments her gorgeous ice-blue J. Mendel gown (she also showed up with some serious wrist bling to offset the graphic mani). She added a large Chanel ring to complete her look.

Deschanel has showcased other whimsical manis at past award shows: at last year's Golden Globes, the actress rocked ultra-Hollywood white, black, and gold nails with a film reel design. At the 2012 Emmys, she wore a quirky peach polka-dot design dotted with Swarovski crystals.
