‘I don’t know how we did it,’ says Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes on win over South Korea
With Marcus Douthit falling to injury in the second quarter, the odds were stacked against the Philippine national men’s basketball team in its FIBA Asia Championship semifinal match against South Korea.
But Gilas Pilipinas dug deep and somehow found a way to win
“To tell you the truth, up to now I don’t know how we did it. We just kept fighting,” said Gilas coach Chot Reyes.
“They had to carry us out of that court.”
Douthit had been a tower of strength for Gilas all tournament long, stepping up for the team when his teammates’ effort was lacking.
This time, it was the rest of the team’s turn to step up for him. Marc Pingris anchored the defense, Jayson Castro manufactured points, while Jimmy Alapag and Ranidel De Ocampo manufactured clutch baskets as the Philippines turned back South Korea, 86-79.
“Without Marcus, you know we said Marcus has been carrying us for so long, now it’s our turn to carry him, that we got his back,” said Reyes.
