The Ugly Truth Behind The Super Bowl And Sex Trafficking

The Ugly Truth Behind The Super Bowl And Sex Trafficking

New York is preparing for the droves of people who will make their way to MetLife Stadium for Super Bowl XLVIII on Sunday, but city and federal officials are focusing on more than just football fans attending the event.
These officials are preparing for what has become the largest annual human-trafficking event in the United States, working with transportation providers to identify and rescue victims of the sinister enterprise.
Using this coordinated effort, the feds hope to liberate many of the tens of thousands of women and girls who are expected to be delivered to the Big Apple and exploited for sex or forced labor.
In the halls of Congress, Rep. Christopher Smith (R-NJ) shed light on the disturbing annual practice, hoping to spark a debate that could find solutions aimed at mitigating the practice in the future.
“In less than a week, New Jersey will be hosting the Super Bowl, and along with welcoming enthusiastic fans, the state also is preparing for a likely influx of both domestic and international traffickers,” said Smith, co-chairman of the Congressional Caucus on Human Trafficking
“We know from the past, any sports venue — especially the Super Bowl — acts as a sex-trafficking magnet.”
In his statement before the legislative body, Smith recalled statistics compiled by the National Center of Missing and Exploited Children that claim approximately 10,000 women were involved in sex-trafficking during the 2010 Super Bowl in Miami.
A year before the championship in Miami, Manual A. Walcott received a 20-year prison sentence when he was implicated in an undercover police sting operation targeting traffickers at Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa, Florida. Walcott was detained by authorities when he offered two girls – a 14-year-old and an 18-year-old – to investigators for a “Super Bowl Special” price of $300.
The Super Bowl and other major sporting events present lucrative opportunities for those involved in the illegal trade, offering a sudden influx of individuals who travel for the event and are inclined to seek additional entertainment preceding and following the main event.
The women and children who are exploited by the practice are comprised of both American and foreign citizens, who are often forced to engage in prostitution or to work without pay.
Sex-trafficking has evolved into a lucrative business in the US and around the globe. The industry grosses $9.5 billion annually in the US, and an additional $32 billion worldwide. Trafficked women are constantly moved throughout the country so as to avoid drawing the attention of law enforcement officials.
Sadly, many of the women enslaved by the practice are children. Estimates project that there are between 100,000 and 150,000 underage sex workers currently active in the US. On the whole, these women do not enter into the profession willfully, but are lured and kidnapped by pimps and massive sex rings who enslave them in the practice.
Shared Hope International reports that underage sex workers average 6,000 clients over the course of five years, and are typically instructed to serve between 10 and 15 clients per night. However, reports confirm that girls have served as many as 45 clients in a day during peak demand times, which includes major sports events.
In an effort to raise public awareness around the issue, the Department of Homeland Security has engaged other federal agencies, foreign governments and police officials to alert the public to be on the lookout for suspected traffickers and their victims.
At the center of this effort is a campaign to educate transportation workers on how to identify victims of the practice.
“We teach flight attendants to be alert for indicators, but never to try and rescue a victim or display unusual concern or alarm,” said Nancy Rivard, president and founder of Airline Ambassadors International.
“If they are uncomfortable with a situation, they are to report it to the cockpit with seat numbers of passengers involved. Pilots are to call Station Operation Command at the arrival airport, who are to call the DHS Tip Line to alert law enforcement for proper assessment.”
Officials stress that public assistance is required to most effectively control the situation. They have requested that anyone who notices suspicious activity should call the National Human Trafficking Resource Center at 1-888-373-7888.

One thing that stands out about the list is there isn’t a check-in from New York City on the list, and this may be due to the fact that there isn’t one central location in which people would check in.

When Kids In Third World Countries Read First World Problems, They Suddenly Don’t Feel Like Problems

Ah, First World Problems. If you live in a western country, for one reason or another, you’re probably guilty of uttering one of these phrases.
Sure, minor inconveniences can really make a day unpleasant, but when put into perspective, having cold leather seats when you get into your car during the winter isn’t the end of the world.
Not having clean water, however, is an entirely different story. In order to highlight what “problems” actually are, Water Is Life launched the “First World Problems Anthem” video last year.
The video consists of people in the Third World reading tweets that were labeled with the hashtag #FirstWorldProblems. The stark contrast is sure to make the line at Starbucks seem like much less of a big deal.

Woman Wearing ‘Convincing’ Diaper Strapped With 2.5KG Of Cocaine Receives 2-Year Prison Sentence

Woman Wearing ‘Convincing’ Diaper Strapped With 2.5KG Of Cocaine Receives 2-Year Prison Sentence
If you’re looking for ways to smuggle drugs into the country, scratch wearing a cocaine-filled diaper off the list, as two women unsuccessfully tried to do this earlier this year. Now, one of them has been sentenced for her actions.
Michelle Blassingale was busted at JFK International Airport in Queens, New York, on January 26 with over 2.5 kilograms of cocaine in a duct tape-sealed diaper she was wearing.
Alongside her partner in crime, Priscilla Pena, Blessingale boarded a Jet Blue flight wearing the cocaine diaper from the Dominican Republic to New York, where drug-sniffing dogs caught a whiff of her diaper.
The two women were detained after Customs and Border Protection officers observed Blassingale “walked away with an awkward gait,” and subjected them to strip searches.
Blassingale told Federal Judge Sandra Townes that overwhelming bills and her unemployed status made her do the desperate job for a mere $9,000.
“I felt this was the only way to resolve all these issues,” she said.
“Unfortunately, it led me to where I am here today. You shouldn’t look for the easiest way out.”
Blassingale was sentenced to two years in prison.

Waiting To Exhale: New York Might Just Be The Next State To Legalize Weed

Waiting To Exhale: New York Might Just Be The Next State To Legalize Weed
New York may become the third state to legalize weed.
The Huffington Post reports that New York Democratic Senator Liz Krueger revealed a proposal to fully legalize and tax weed earlier today.
Krueger condemned marijuana prohibition as a “policy that just hasn’t worked” at a press conference in City Hall.
“The illegal marijuana economy is alive and well,” she said, “and our unjust laws are branding nonviolent New Yorkers, especially young adults, as criminals, creating a vicious cycle that ruins lives and needlessly wastes taxpayer dollars.”
The bill is New York’s third attempt this year to get the ball rolling for legal weed. Proposals to legalize weed for seriously ill patients and plug a loophole in the state’s ancient marijuana decriminalization law both passed New York’s state Assembly earlier this year, but the Senate adjourned in June without following through on either act.
Pot advocates hope this new bill will have better luck, but admit that the state’s failure to adopt even the most modest proposals doesn’t make its chances any better.
“It’s unlikely that this bill is passing this year,” said Gabriel Sayegh, the New York director of the Drug Policy Alliance, a group that advocates for the legalization of all drugs.
Still, he said, “it is an important contribution to the discussion that we should be having about our broken marijuana policies in New York.”
More people are arrested for marijuana possession than for any other offense in New York. Krueger highlighted at the press conference that the majority of the people caught with weed are black and Latino, yet many studies have shown that marijuana is actually more commonly used by whites.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has little if any desire to legalize weed, even for medical use.
A New York law created in 1977 states that possession of a small amount of weed is an offense on par with jaywalking. But if you’re caught holding or smoking weed in public, you can be punished with up to three months in jail and a $500 fine.
This is the law most responsible for the 600,000 people who have been arrested for marijuana possession in New York since 1997. Most of the young black and Latino men charged with this offense, however, only bring weed into public view after police ask them to empty their pockets. New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly sought to put an end to this practice last year, but pot advocates insist that more reforms are needed.
“We’re spending taxpayer money to ruin lives, disproportionately for those from communities of color, with no real public policy goal to be found in any of it,” Krueger said.

Kendall Jenner and Harry Styles Leave NYC Hotel Together

Harry Styles, Kendall Jenner247PapsTV / Splash News
Kendall Jenner and Harry Styles have reunited in NYC.
After going on a dinner date in West Hollywood, Calif. last month, the duo was spotted out together again Saturday, leaving the Gansevoort hotel in New York City.
The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star, who sported a brown jacket, white sweater and skinny jeans, tried to keep a low profile with the One Direction singer, but that proved to be a difficult feat when fans swarmed them as they tried to leave.
A source tells E! News exclusively, Jenner arrived yesterday in NYC for a meeting, adding that she and Styles have been in touch ever since the American Music Awards.

The source added that although they were spotted leaving the same together, Jenner is staying at a different hotel than Styles.
"I've never seen Kendall happier and more fan friendly," another source told E! News. "They came off the elevator holding hands and then she stood and watched while he posed with fans.
Jenner and Styles have both played coy when discussing the circumstances around their relationship.
The 18-year-old model told E! News she and Styles are "friends," adding "he's cool."

Meanwhile, the 19-year-old boybander quickly tried to change the subject when Piers Morgan asked if he and Jenner were dating, saying, "I mean, we went out for dinner, but no, I guess."
When Morgan went on to question if the pair's date was actually a budding romance, Styles replied, "dunno…let's move on shall we!"
Rumors about their possible romance sparked after they were snapped leaving Craig's restaurant at about 12:15 in the morning Nov. 20.

How To Insult Your Judgmental Relatives During The Holidays (Without Them Realizing It)

How To Insult Your Judgmental Relatives During The Holidays (Without Them Realizing It)
It’s here! “The most wonderful time of the year.” Whoever coined that phrase was one hilarious, sarcastic, simplistic, yet creative genius – basically, a renaissance version of myself. I’d bet the house that he was a New Yorker. Or maybe it was a woman who coined the phrase, but who really cares? It’s not the point of the article and I’ve never been known for my outstanding ability to be politically correct. This is why the holidays are (not) my favorite part of the year.
I was born in New England, a fact I don’t admit much. Every Thanksgiving, I take the four-hour journey back to the suburbs just to have dinner with a very blasé group of non-New Yorkers. In other words, they don’t get me.
The only people angrier than me on Thanksgiving are New York City taxi drivers, and who can blame them? The Macy’s Day Parade makes your commute even more awesome. What genius came up with the idea to put a parade in the middle ofTimes Square, blocking off all transit in and out of the city? I would bet it was probably the guy who coined the phrase, “This is the MOST wonderful time of the year!”
I can see him, sitting at his desk, wondering, “How can I make this holiday seem even more like hell? I know! I’ll stage a parade every year, fill it with tourists and have every New Yorker navigate their way through happy people.” Perhaps this man saw the parade as a gift; an excuse handed to us on a platter as an explanation to why you were unfortunately unable to make it to Thanksgiving dinner. Well, it’s the best excuse ever. It’s on television, and I’m sure your entire family is watching it, so you’ve got your alibi.
However, if you’re like most people, you didn’t see that the parade was your “out.” So, due to your lack of pragmatism and observatory skills, you have arrived at your destination ready to eat. I’m not a food snob, but after a decade in the city, if I commute four hours, I would expect the food to be nothing less than “out-of-this-world, we-flew-in-Mario Batali” kind of amazing. Alas, it never is. The turkey is dry, your vegetables are vegetables, and the cranberry sauce came from a can. I navigated through a parade to be here; the least the host could do is have it catered.
Time to face it: you’re there. It’s official. If you are the only New Yorker at the table, you probably are the most interesting and most judgmental one in attendance, and this very second your relatives are likely reading an article on “how to deal with my from-the-city-I-think-I-am-too-fabulous family member.” Brace yourself for enthralling dinner conversation about babies, marriage, houses, kids, public health care, school systems and infrastructure.
If you are anything like me, you want to start throwing plates at people. Subtlety is clutch when answering the inevitable questions about why you aren’t married at 30. Calm down, ask for more wine, and remember the following responses to get you through:

So you dressed like a boss?

Then expect this stupid question: “Why are you so dressed up?!”
You should respond to this inquiry with the likes of, “You are hilarious! All of my dressy clothes are still at the dry cleaner from NYFW. It’s been months and holiday parties are coming up, so I need to pick those up! My neighborhood dry cleaner, by the way, LOVES me. He holds my clothes for me forever. He gets it – I’m all over the city, events, galas, openings, fundraisers…I mean does it ever stop?! My apologies, though! All of my nice clothes are stuck at the dry cleaners so I had to come casual today, not really my “thing.”
Now, flip the switch! Why not? They already think you are one sassy b*tch.
“Well don’t you look cute! Boot-cut jeans? Wow, vintage? I don’t believe it! Samantha, come here! Have you seen Melissa’s vintage? Wait, shut up; they’re not vintage? I haven’t seen these since high school! And that was over a decade ago! We’ve got this FABULOUS vintage shop by me that has high-rise vintage flares from the 70s. Those aren’t high-rise are they? Yeah, didn’t think so.”
Do NOT stop talking about yourself and your dry cleaner until your family member walks away.

Get your hair blown out and buy yourself a new Yurman piece; it’s Thanksgiving. You deserve a thank you gift.

Then expect this stupid question from everyone at the table that already knows the answer: “So? Tell us, who are youdating?”
Respond with something along the lines of, “I’m exploring my options. I’ve found a few worthy of my time, but why settle? Chrissy, your wedding was beautiful, by the way!”

Time for more wine? Ask for a glass of Montepulciano. They won’t have it, and you’ll look like a prick. Well done.

Then, expect this stupid question: “Where are you meeting people?”
Between us, let’s be honest: Tinder, J-Date, beer pong on the UES. Just keep the truth to yourself and politely answer, “Oh, you know, functions, galas, charity events, conferences. All I’m doing is meeting people! Summer was great, spent a lot of time out in the Hamptons.”
Details, details, details. Look at your cousin’s manicure and casually say, “Essie’s new winter collection, shearling darling, right?”
She will likely be very confused. Everyone at the table will most likely be very confused. Great! Proceed with your questions, then! Ask her for her thoughts on sable collar versus vested interest.

Talk about yourself, but vaguely, using one-word answers.

Then, expect this stupid question from your aunt or uncle: “When are you going to settle down, have a family and move to the suburbs?”
Respond with an alarming, “When I decide life is no longer worth living.”
At this point, NO ONE should want to talk to you, but unfortunately, these topics might still come up:
“My friend just had a baby!” says your overly excited cousin, Janice. To which you reply, “Oy vey! Can you imagine? Schlepping around a baby stroller? No thank you.”
“How much are you paying for rent?” asks your annoyingly curious brother-in-law, Zach. You
reply, “Relevance?” This will totally lead to awkward silence, which is awesome because you’re dominating right now.
“I just got engaged!” cousin Melissa exclaims, needing a Xanax. You rudely answer, “Oh! I didn’t even notice the ring! Come closer, so I can see. Mazel!! It’s beautiful.”
Congratulations. You will have survived Thanksgiving. Holiday season has just begun. Brace yourself.
